AI visibility is whether AI engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — actually name your business when a buyer asks them for a recommendation.
That’s it. Either AI names you, or it names someone else. AI visibility is the plain-English term for which of those is happening to you right now.

Why “AI visibility” is the term that’s sticking
The industry has thrown a lot of jargon at this — AEO, GEO, “share of voice,” “answer engine optimization.” Most business owners use none of it. They just notice their competitor keeps getting mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT, and they don’t. “AI visibility” is the plain label for that, and it’s the one the whole field is converging on because it’s the one that actually makes sense to the person paying for it.
How AI visibility is different from being #1 on Google
For years, being found online meant ranking in a list of links. AI changed the shape of the answer:
- Old way: ten blue links. The buyer scrolls and chooses. Being on page one is a win.
- New way: one written answer — sometimes one or two names. If you’re not named, there’s no list to be on. Being “findable” isn’t enough; you have to be the one AI is confident enough to say.
This is why a business can have decent SEO and still have poor AI visibility. They’re related, but they’re not the same scoreboard.
What drives AI visibility
Three things, in plain terms:
- Can AI read you? Clean, crawlable pages where the important facts are real text, not baked into an image.
- Can AI understand and trust you? Consistent business facts, direct answers to buyer questions, and visible proof — reviews, credentials, results.
- Does AI have reason to name you over others? Clear positioning in your trade and area, plus authority signals from around the web.
Our AIFSO method breaks these down into 59 readiness signals, and the full report runs real buyer questions across the three major engines so you can see exactly where you stand against competitors.
The honest ceiling
No one can guarantee an AI will name you — be wary of anyone who promises a spot. What you can do is remove every reason for AI to leave you out. That’s what improving your AI visibility actually means.
